This week we have a timely blog for anyone whose little peeps are suffering with troublesome winter skin. The lovely Karen and Emma at Scrubbington’s share their expert knowledge, explaining why children’s skin is especially vulnerable and how we can help skin stay comfortably soft. Over to the experts:

The skin is our largest organ and serves a host of vital functions. It keeps out germs, toxins and harmful radiation, keeps in moisture and nutrition and even makes important nutrients such as vitamin D. Although skin makes a wonderfully effective barrier against many external agents, it is nonetheless absorbent, meaning substances can pass through the skin and into our bodies. Whilst we’ve become increasingly conscious of what we’re putting in our children’s bodies via food intake, the same concern for what we’re putting in via the products we use on their skin is lagging in comparison.

Parents are right to be concerned about their children's level of exposure to potentially harmful toxins. Being smaller (with therefore proportionally greater exposure compared to adults) and with their bodies still developing, children are much more vulnerable to potential harm from skincare products. Products used on children’s skin will impact them over a much longer and more significant time frame. Children also have thinner skin than adults and less ability to break down and flush out toxins and other nasties, such as parabens and sulphates. Research into the negative effects of parabens has in fact led to Denmark banning the use of them in children’s products, and the negative effects of sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) have been widely documented. Found in the vast majority of foaming skincare products (including children’s products) SLS is a known skin irritant, exacerbating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It should be avoided - especially by babies and children who have sensitive skin.

(Skin) food for thought eh?!

At Scrubbington’s HQ we have adopted an edible skincare mantra when developing our range of products :

“If you wouldn’t put it in their mouths, you shouldn’t put it on their skin.”

Following this mantra, the Scrubbington’s range contains 98% natural ingredients, with no sulphates or parabens - we pride ourselves in putting only the good stuff into our products and can guarantee no nasties will ever make an appearance in our bottles. Proudly made in the UK and as kind to children’s skin as they are to our planet, our products are also cruelty free and suitable for vegans.

Scrubbingtons top tips to care for young skin:

·     Choose child friendly products that are free of sulphates and parabens

·     Always protect your child’s skin from the sun – look for an SPF of 50 or higher

·     Use a moisturiser on young skin in the winter to keep it hydrated

·     Limit your child’s exposure to other household nasties like cleaning products and air freshening sprays
