“Surviving and getting through situations which challenge us is when we show our true colours.”

Lucy Atherden’s mantra has served her well. Having nursed soldiers and civilians across the world as part of the Army Nursing Corps, Lucy is now preparing young people for the potential risks of overseas travel with her ground-breaking Adventurer First Aid course. Lucy’s 6-hour course focuses on key skills for adventure travel and includes emergency first aid medicine, as well as survival and rescue techniques.

Lucy is ideally placed to train young people about how to deal with extreme injuries in extreme situations. Having nursed in remote areas under hostile conditions, Lucy has experienced trauma and disease we rarely see in the UK. She has also worked within the prison service as a first responder to medical emergencies.

Lucy has her own incredible travel tales. Whilst studying at the Royal Centre of Excellence for Defence Medicine she undertook adventure and sailing expeditions overseas. Lucy says:

“I’ll be honest. I hated the night watch when we were sailing. Wet, dark and cold.  With a rota of 4 hours on and 4 hours off for weeks on end, keeping your eyes open and a smile on your face was hard.  But it is these moments when we discover what we are made of.”

Lucy is really clear that the Adventurer course is not meant to scare people. In her own words:

“Knowledge is power!  Ignorance is not bliss when things start to go wrong. Young people take risks. It is an important part of growing up. However, things don’t always go to plan and it vital to know what to do should things go wrong.”

As part of the Adventurer course, Lucy will train young people in the importance of being prepared before travelling so that you know how and who to contact should an emergency happen – things that are often taken for granted, or assumed that “someone else will know”.
